A client asked us last month: “Do we still need SEO, or has AI replaced it?”
Honest answer: SEO is more important than ever. It is just not the whole game anymore.
Search in 2026 is three games played on the same field. If you market a business, this is worth two minutes of your time.
SEO, search engine optimization, gets you discovered. Your pages rank on Google, people click, you get traffic. This is the foundation. Without a fast, well-structured website, nothing else matters.
AEO, answer engine optimization, gets your answer extracted. When someone asks “How much does a website cost in Dubai?”, the featured snippet or voice assistant reads out one answer. AEO is how you make sure it is yours: questions as headings, clear 50-word answers, FAQ schema, plain language.
GEO, generative engine optimization, gets you recommended. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity who to hire, the AI names brands it trusts. That trust is built from consistent information, third-party mentions, reviews, and genuinely useful content.
A simple way to remember the three: SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you quoted. GEO gets you recommended.
Here is the part most agencies will not tell you: these three share about 80 percent of the same foundation. A fast website. Honest, expert content. Clear structure. Consistent business information. Companies do not need three strategies. They need one good one, executed properly, measured on all three fronts.
The mistake we see across the region is businesses chasing the newest acronym while the basics rot: websites loading in four seconds, service pages with two sentences of content, different phone numbers on different directories. AI engines notice all of it, because they cross-check everything.
If you want a quick self-diagnosis, answer these three questions honestly. Does your homepage load in under two seconds on a mid-range phone? Does every service page answer the five questions customers ask most, in plain language? Is your business name, address, and phone number identical on your website, Google profile, and every directory? Three yeses means your foundation is solid. Anything less, and the acronyms can wait.
Fix the foundation first. Then optimize for answers. Then build the authority that earns recommendations. In practice that sequence takes most businesses one focused quarter, not a year.
